Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opening batter Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with statements from captain Stokes regarding the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered this message in multiple conversations following his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes versus the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where England are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had let his message to "drift around" within the squad.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I needed to have done," said the England leader.

However, after Crawley made 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with some skepticism," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to his side were beaten in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The team subsequently took a holiday to Noosa in the gap between the second and third Tests.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he revealed his players had held "honest" talks and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to stay in contention in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley stated the guidance from Stokes and coach McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous tenure in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. We believed we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this game."

The Hosts On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's wicket late on Saturday was part of a decisive triple-strike by Australian spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side 207-6 chasing a daunting total of 435.

Consequently, Australia need four wickets on the final day to move to an insurmountable 3-0 advantage with three Tests.

A loss will extend the English team's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes series loss.

This series will be completed in only 11 days of cricket – after England losing the first two Tests in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when the Australians completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been determined so quickly. The hosts have also won in eleven days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"This is disheartening," admitted the batsman. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we will definitely view it like that," he continued.

"The challenge has been tough. Australia is a very, very good side. It was always going to be hard touring here against them. They were the front-runners and they've proven why."

Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

Although Crawley's performance in Adelaide probably answers doubts about his short-term future in the England team, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 runs in the team's second innings on day four, adding to his poor record against the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a fifty and boasts an average of just 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and returned a poorer average.

However, the opener said any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "the media" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said he. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year to be frank."

"He has played several excellent innings. It is noise from the outside. There's no chat of that nature on Ollie amongst the players," he concluded.
