Wimbledon Adopts Video Review System for the First Time.

The Championships tennis court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in implementing video review systems.

Replay systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Players will gain the option to contest specific rulings from the chair umpire, echoing the protocol already in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

The new system is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This step arrives only a season following the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which brought an end to the 147-year role of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Players will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the official to re-examine specific situations, including:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there will be no limit on the amount of reviews a competitor can ask for.

Case in Point

An illustrative example occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his rival had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled Draper was guilty of interference, granting the rally to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

This technology are not new for Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system in place at all of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

A further change at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where the crowd have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was in or out.

In other news, with exactly a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
