Patients Stopping Slimming Injections Gain Back Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

New research indicates that people who stop using blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who stop conventional lifestyle programs.

Research printed in a leading health publication shows that while obese people frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Individuals purchasing these treatments need to be cognizant of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the medication ends," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery means a return to starting mass in about a year and a half.

Comparing Treatments

The analysis, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

Scientists emphasize that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a less rapid weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

The Reason for the Quick Regain

Experts believe the mode of action of the drugs is key to understanding the amplified rebound.

GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."

A Chronic Disease?

Health authorities suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians contend that, considering the high risk of relapse, the treatment should be considered long-term.

This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "emphasize the chronic character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Experiences

People who have come off the jabs describe a sudden resurgence of hunger.

"I experienced a trigger activating and you become starving," said a patient.

This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Widespread Adoption

Recent estimates show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is greater among women than men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss relies on combined lifestyle support.
