Jair Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under house arrest.

The one-time leader was convicted of orchestrating a government overthrow in last fall and handed more than over two decades in jail, but he remained under confinement pending legal challenges.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice the presiding justice said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a precautionary step after "new facts" came to light.

This included trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could facilitate a possible escape.

Legal Document Reveals Flight Fears

In a filing authorising the detention, Justice Moraes said intelligence from the unit overseeing his home detention suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the surveillance device to guarantee victory in his escape.

This, it said, would be assisted by the chaos caused by the gathering called by his child.

His son, his son Flávio, who works as a legislator, called for a gathering of his backers near his father's house to take place on the weekend.

The senator wrote on digital networks on Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your country, or observe everything from your mobile device there on your sofa? I call on you to fight with us."

He said the gathering would be so supporters could "pray for his well-being and for the return of democracy in our country."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of the magistrate's decision was the potential of his move to foreign missions near the home, considering that the investigations revealed a record of planning to seek refuge through a consular facility", a announcement said.

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on last Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the High Court to permit him to serve his whole jail sentence under domestic detention, with electronic monitoring.

They also petitioned that the former president be authorized to depart his residence for medical treatment, saying he required ongoing care for pulmonary infections and other illnesses.

Background on Conviction

He was determined responsible of orchestrating a plot aimed at retaining his authority after he lost the presidential race to his ideological adversary, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

High Court judges said that he had knowledge of a plot which encompassed plans to murder Lula and his vice-presidential running mate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Alexandre de Moraes - the top judicial official who has been overseeing his judicial proceedings.

But a following week, on January 8th, thousands of Bolsonaro supporters attacked and damaged official structures in the national capital, Brasília.

The security forces took action and around fifteen hundred individuals were taken into custody.

The justices found that the protesters had been incited by the former president whose scheme, they said, was for the country's army to step in, reestablish control and reinstate his authority.

At the period, the legal team called the over 27-year sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also prohibited from running for public office until twenty-sixty - a decade minus two years after the end of his sentence.

The former president called the legal proceedings a "witch hunt and said it was designed to prevent him competing in the next presidential race.
